What Is YPD?

The YPD began in October 1915, when it was established under the umbrella of the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Over time, though, its seeds were planted even earlier, in the early 1900s, when church leaders recognized the need for a structured way to nurture children, youth, and young adults in faith, mission, and leadership.

Through the decades, YPD has grown into a vital part of the AME connection, spanning countless local churches, districts, and regions. Today, thousands of young people across our denomination participate in this vibrant division.

Why 1915? That was when the WMS officially adopted and merged what had been various youth and children’s units into a unified “Young People and Children’s Division.” Since then, YPD has become the youth organization in the AME family.
